Before you touch any cables, you need to know what the router is trying to tell you. The red light looks different depending on which ASUS router you own. It will either be a red globe icon (the internet light) or a solid red power light on mesh models like the ZenWiFi.

Step 1: Run ASUS Router App Diagnostics

Most people do not type 192.168.1.1 into a computer browser anymore. The fastest way to find the exact problem is to use the ASUS mobile app on your phone.

  1. Connect your phone to your ASUS Wi-Fi network (even though the internet is not working).
  2. Open the ASUS Router app on your phone.
  3. Look at the top of the main screen. You will see a red banner that says “Disconnected.”
  4. Tap that red banner. The app will read the system logs and give you a specific error code.

ASUS routers require the internet cord to plug into one specific port. Plugging it into the wrong slot will instantly cause a red light.

  2. Look closely at the plastic clip on both ends of the cable. If the little plastic locking tab is snapped off, the cable will slide out of the port just enough to drop the connection. If this clip is broken, throw the cable away and use a new one.
  3. Plug the cable firmly into the WAN port. On ASUS routers, this port is usually colored blue and has a small globe icon above it.
  4. Never plug the modem cable into the yellow LAN ports.

Step 4: Perform a Sequenced Power Cycle

A simple reboot often fails because the modem and router turn on at the wrong times and fail to talk to each other. You must force them to connect in the correct order. Timing is very important here.

  1. Unplug the power cables from both the ISP modem and the ASUS router.
  2. Wait 30 seconds to let all power drain out of the devices.

If the light is still solid red, the router’s internal memory (NVRAM) likely has broken software files from a recent update. A normal restart will not fix this. You need to do a hard hardware reset.

  1. Leave the router turned on.
  2. Find the small, hidden RESET button on the back of the router.
  3. Use a paperclip to press and hold the button for exactly 10 seconds. Do not let go until the front power light starts flashing.
  4. The router will wipe all broken data and restart. Once it turns back on, connect to the open “ASUS” Wi-Fi network and set up your network like it is brand new.

If your router’s power light keeps blinking red, the software inside is broken. This usually happens if the power goes out while the router is updating at night. You need to use ASUS Rescue Mode to put new software on it.

  1. Go to the ASUS Support website and download the newest software (firmware) for your exact router. Also, download the ASUS Firmware Restoration tool (for Windows).
  2. Use a regular internet cable to plug your computer directly into one of the router’s yellow LAN ports. Turn off the Wi-Fi on your computer.
  3. Unplug the router’s power cord. Press and hold the small RESET button.
